Not only does this 1953 classic show why Douglas is considered one of the great actors of his time, it also allows him to show off his juggling talents. In The Juggler, Douglas' charisma (and circus talents) make his portrayal of Muller, a former entertainer struggling with PTSD after being freed from a Nazi concentration camp, all the more believable. Just as believable is the darkness inside Muller that haunts him when he's forced to face unthinkable memories of his time in the camp and the grief of losing his family. The film handles Muller's trauma sensitively, and although he commits violent acts, characters make it clear that he is unwell and not only needs help but deserves it. In many ways, it is a film that was far ahead of its time.
