The Map That Leads to You
What's the Story?
In THE MAP THAT LEADS TO YOU, best friends Heather (Madelyn Cline), Amy (Madison Thompson), and Connie (Sofia Wylie) take a post-college European trip before Heather starts a banking job in New York. Heather meets the handsome Jack (KJ Apa) on a train, and the two click right away. They begin spending time together and quickly fall in love, as do Connie and Jack's friend Raef (Orlando Norman). But Jack is hiding a serious condition and eventually has to make a decision on whether to go back to the United States with Heather or stay in Europe as his health deteriorates.
Is It Any Good?
Creative editing on this otherwise predictable YA romantic drama aims to give the film a heightened sense of naturalism and deeper meaning. Veteran director Lasse Hallström (My Life as a Dog, Chocolat, Dear John) splices scenes together in The Map That Leads to You to highlight snippets of conversation and moments of action, mixing these with vertical screens mimicking FaceTime conversations and selfies. The medley helps build amiable momentum and authenticity into the film, but it still suffers from a flimsy plot. Despite the weak storyline, the movie makes the most of its appealing European settings and attractive cast. Fans of YA romance and travel stories may find entertainment value, though the familiar plot offers few surprises.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how The Map That Leads to You portrays sex and relationships. Is it affectionate? Respectful? Parents, talk to your teens about your own values regarding sex and relationships.
Jack and Heather have a disagreement about taking selfies and constant photos while traveling: He says it's not living in the moment; she compares it to his grandfather's journaling about his travels. What is your opinion?
What do the main characters learn about making plans versus going with the flow in life? Can you apply their experiences to your own life?
How does the film depict drinking and drug use? Are they glamorized? Are there consequences? Does that matter?
The film is largely set in Spain. Does that backdrop play a role in the film, or could the main story have been located somewhere else entirely?
