What's the Story?

Anna Ripoll (Candela Peña) is a Barcelona-based detective who's been on leave due to a family tragedy at the start of THE MARKED WOMAN. She's eager to get back to work and gets put, conditionally, on a case involving a woman with amnesia (Ana Rujas) found drugged and tortured in a shipping container. She has to collaborate with an agent from the Algeciras police force, Quique Zárate (Pol López), who is on his own personal investigation after being accused of corruption by a now-missing informant. The two cases will collide in dangerous and unexpected ways.

While this film could have benefitted from tighter editing, the tale, setting, and characters combine to create a compelling mystery. The Marked Woman runs long for the story it's telling, meaning some parts lull. Perhaps filling in the amnesiac's memory more quickly would have picked up the pace. The action also contains a few scenes that don't feel realistic for a police investigation (why do they keep leaving the woman they're protecting alone?!). But the moody port and urban settings in Barcelona and Algeciras, combined with solid source material (novel by Rosa Montero) and effective acting, add up to an engaging tale.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the underworld shown in The Marked Woman. How does this differ from locations you might be accustomed to seeing from the Mediterranean coast of Spain? How do the settings support the mood and themes of the film?

  • How are Ripoll and Zárate different? In what ways are their characters on similar paths?

  • What other films have you seen that involve a character with amnesia? Is the unknown woman's memory loss believable here? Why or why not?
