The Moon and Back
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In THE MOON AND BACK, high-school senior Lydia (Isabel May) is still mourning the death of her father (Nat Faxon) almost a year later, and strongly resists the fact that she and her mom (Missi Pyle) can't afford to stay in the home where she grew up. While packing for the move, Lydia discovers a science-fiction screenplay her dad never finished, and decides to make the movie both to honor him and to send in as her application to film school. But she has no idea how to make a movie, and no money, either. Lydia's going to have to deal with some changes if she wants to make this movie happen.
Is It Any Good?
This is a warm, sweet, and gently funny dramedy that's enjoyable even if it's predictable. The story, cast, and production values in The Moon and Back are all fine, but there's no spark to really take it to the next level. The comedy's a bit uneven, with some things bringing a chuckle and some landing flat. Teens will relate to Lydia's conflicting need for change and resistance to it, while gently exploring issues of grief, loss, and moving on.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the strong language in The Moon and Back. Is it realistic? Is it a big deal? Why?
Is the portrayal of teen drinking realistic? What are some negative consequences of drinking alcohol?
Is Lydia a positive role model? How does she model perseverance? How is teamwork important to the story?
