References and images include alcoholic beverages, allegations of sexual assault, bombs, guns, flag and effigy burnings, men nude from the waist up, and terrorism. Swear words include "ass,", "bulls--t," "damn," "hell," "f--k," "f---ing," "motherf----r," "pissed," "s--t," and "son of a bitches." Positive messages include owning up to one's mistakes, putting the needs of others before your own, and treating sports teammates and opponents with respect.
What's the Story?
In THE REDEEM TEAM, NBA players are recruited to bring back the gold to the U.S. men's basketball team at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games after failing to win the medal four years earlier. The talent lineup includes Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade. Through archival footage and firsthand interviews with players, coaches, and sportswriters, the film explores the team's efforts to return to the top of their game.
Is It Any Good?
For kid and teen sports fans, this film fittingly scores with its theme about the task of team building. The Redeem Team's coach, Mike Krzyzewski, tells star NBA players who are now U.S. Olympic team members that they "have to give me the egos that you have in your current basketball teams, bring them to this team, and put it under one ego umbrella." They listen and learn to create camaraderie on and off the court. "There's no better feeling than winning the gold medal," reminds the coach of the team's goal. "It's your country. It's the world. It's the Olympics. There's no greater moment."
