What's the Story?

In THE SECRET OF BUTTERFLIES, a young insect named Ryan (Ryan Bartley in the English dubbed version) longs to fly and become a butterfly. After escaping a dangerous human home, he ventures into the wild, where he meets new insect friends and hears about a mysterious white spider who may hold the secret to transformation. But as Ryan chases his dream, he discovers that not everything—or everyone—is what it seems. This animated adventure explores what happens when chasing outer beauty leads to unexpected challenges, and how true strength often comes from within.

The Secret of Butterflies is a heartfelt underdog tale with some intense moments and big emotions. Ryan's journey to believe in himself is inspiring, and his sidekick Keenan brings humor and heart. The story has promise, especially with its themes of identity, inner strength, and the power of friendship, but it doesn't quite come together. While the animation is colorful and creative in places, it often feels stiff and inconsistent, especially during action scenes. The story takes a while to get going, and younger viewers may find parts confusing or even a bit too dark—especially scenes involving fire, captivity, or characters in despair.

Despite a few touching moments and a likable lead, the film struggles to keep its pacing and tone. In the end, while it carries a positive message, The Secret of Butterflies doesn't quite measure up to more polished bug-themed adventures done before.
