Excellent film has some mature content, and is psychologically disturbing and shocking.
“The Talented Mr. Ripley” is not for young teenagers, mostly due to its disturbing themes and psychological horror.
VIOLENCE: The main character commits three murders throughout the film. The first is incredibly graphic and bloody. What makes this scene so unsettling is the fact that the murderer is in love with the victim. What starts off as self-defence quickly becomes brutal and gory. The second murder is similar. The third death in the film is for me, the most disturbing scene of the film. Although nothing is shown, the lover of the main character is brutally choked to death in a heartbreaking climax. Overall, while the gore itself is not incredibly graphic, the intimacy between the characters before their sudden deaths is very disturbing. I would give the violence a 3/5.
SEX: Contrary to most reviews, I thought there were not many sexually inappropriate scenes throughout the film. One character says he “wishes [he] could fuck this mini fridge,” but most sex-related dialogue is just innuendo. The same character kisses many women throughout the film, but there are no graphic sex scenes. The main character listens to two characters have sex underneath a boat in jealousy, but nothing is heard and no nudity is shown. I would rate the sexual content in this film a 2/5.
LANGUAGE: As most R rated films contain curses and swear words, the bad language in this film is not surprisingly. No slurs are used, and no language in this film hasn’t already been heard by your teens. Personally, cursing isn’t really a problem as long as your kids are old enough to understand what words can and can’t be said in different contexts. The language is about a 4/5 with many f-bombs, but again shouldn’t be of concern.
Overall this film tells a story of a sociopath who steals another man’s identity. He murders the men he loves. I think the most disturbing aspect of this film is the fact that as a viewer, you are put in a position to root for the killer and hope he finds success, contrary to the knowledge that it’s wrong. Very mature teens can probably watch it at 14, but probably average 15. More sheltered kids might want to wait a little bit before watching this excellent film!

Great movie!
I watched this movie with my dad and I’m 13. I honestly disagree with the 17+ rating. I thought that it was a very well written movie with a great plotline. The acting was incredible and the suspense created is great. I did feel throughout watching it that I was a little too young but I didn’t find it too bad. There were a few f-bombs, nudity, smoking, kissing, sex, and 2 very violent murders.

Great movie!
There is one scene where a couple is intimate, but all you can see is there legs. There is violence a couple times in the movie, but only one of the scenes is really graphic. Overall a great movie.

eh, you can handle it
This movie and the acting is really good, and the story is fascinating. You can handle the rough violence, if you are used to watch some.

Great movie with great cast.. but disturbing and violent
The Talented Mr Ripley is a great movie as it offers an entertaining plot and a great storyline. The actors like Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and Jude law are believable and play their parts well. Aside from it being a great movie, I wouldn't recommend this for younger viewers or people who are easily scared or disturbed. This movie is VERY disturbing in parts, and also very violent. It includes 3 gruesome murders where characters are strangled, stabbed with an oar, and bashed. There is also a few gay scenes between Tom and Dickie, where Tom is attracted to Dickie throughout the movie. Tom Ripley is very creepy and a stalker. He lies his way through the entire movie. I have watched several thrillers but this was (for me) the most unsettling with the intense music and the creepy scenes. Overall, I loved the movie and if you can handle the suspense I would recommend it for sure!

dark and excellant
A dark and excellent psychological thriller with 2 bloody murder scenes. In the first one, a man beats another man to death with an oar and we see blood spilling out of his head. In the second one, a man beats another man on the head with a stone statue which is seen later with blood on it. Although most of the gore only takes place in there two scenes, the movie has a very dark tone to it and might not be appropriate for younger children.

Must See
Seeing this movie really depends on the child. I loved it but there were moments where I had to look away because of violence and nudity. Violence comes up in this movie a lot and for some kids it can be very scary so be aware. The nudity is very brief but there are other times in the film that can be uncomfortable because of the topic of sex.

Fantastically exicuted, Though quite creepy.
From an art point of view, The Talented Mr. Ripley is a fantastic movie. A riveting, though creepy story well executed with a fantastically skilled cast.
However, there are some notably creepy scenes (Tom tries to sleep upon Dickies chest, as well as trying to have a bath with him) which may cause younger viewers to become... well, not scared but creeped out. There is a total of three murders, with two of them being bludgeons and one the throttling of a man. It should be noted that the movie is effectively decided in half: the first is quite slow, however the second is much faster paced.
Overall, an interesting study into the makings of a person, success, desire, identity and deceit.

Great Thriller but Dark Feeling Throughout Movie
The Talented Mr. Ripley is a great movie, but has a very dark, dark, dark feeling throughout it. The movie contains great acting and wonderful script, but multiple things parents should take in consideration before letting their kids watch the movie. Talk about homosexuality, brief full-male nudity (hard to see anything "serious" though), strong violence (including semi-gore murders), and mild language, The Talented Mr. Ripley is a great thriller that should only be watched by mature teens.
