What's the Story?

THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE tells how a young Quaker wife from Manchester, England (Amanda Seyfried), receives a vision that tells her she's the embodiment of the second coming of Christ. Spreading her views on how humankind can truly experience God, Ann Lee brings her message to the newly formed United States, where religious freedom is protected. It's there that she establishes the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearance (better known as the Shakers) in cities across the Eastern Seaboard.

One person's art is another person's agony, and that's certainly what Ann Lee brings to the altar in this incredibly well-made biopic. Eliciting great performances from Seyfried and co-star Lewis Pullman (as Lee's brother, William) in particular, director Mona Fastvold brings a remarkable figure from American history to life, deepening many viewers' understanding of what "the Quakers" and "the Shakers" were all about.

From a craft standpoint, there's plenty in The Testament of Ann Lee that's remarkable, but it also brings to mind the experience of sitting through a sermon at church as a child: The message may be solid, but it often takes some maturity to appreciate. And then there's the fact that one of the Shakers' principle beliefs revolves around celibacy as the result of Ann Lee's negative experiences with sex (including 18th century kink), which doesn't exactly scream "young viewers." (Plus, given that the movie's songs aren't of the catchy Broadway variety, but are instead actual Shaker hymns and chants, and the choreography is more like interpretive dance, this isn't one that's necessarily going to grab all the theater kids.) As Lee herself might say, there's a place for every kind of movie, and every movie has its place, but The Testament of Ann Lee's place isn't with most teen audiences.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the theme of religious freedom, as portrayed in The Testament of Ann Lee. What does it mean, and why is it important? Based on the film, how do you think the community around the Shakers felt about their methods? Should anyone be judged for their religious beliefs?

  • What is the film saying about institutional sexism? How has it changed over time/through history? Is it possible to overcome limiting societal beliefs?

  • How do Ann, William, and Mary demonstrate perseverance, teamwork, hard work, organization, and courage? Why are those important character strengths? Do you consider them role models? Why, or why not?

  • Discuss how the close relationship between siblings Ann and William allows their movement to take hold. If you have a sibling, what's something you think you could do together that would make an impact?

  • The Shaker utopia is the longest-lasting commune, practicing social, gender, economic, and spiritual equality, and their influence on furniture, music, and textiles is still present today. What did the film show to indicate why their efforts made such an impact? What do you think would be the advantages and disadvantages of living in a commune?
