The Wrong Paris
What's the Story?
Dawn (Miranda Cosgrove) is a talented artist from small-town Texas in THE WRONG PARIS. When she gets into a prestigious art school in Paris, she realizes she won't have the funds to make her dream come true. She's spent too much of her savings helping her grandmother (Frances Fisher) after an injury, and her parents are no longer alive. So, egged on by her sister, she applies to be a participant in a The Bachelor-style reality TV show called The Honey Pot. She just wants the appearance fee, but trouble is, she finds herself falling for the bachelor (Pierson Fodé).
Is It Any Good?
Frothy and easy on the eyes, this romcom is chock full of stereotypes, but it does exactly what it sets out to do. The Wrong Paris is not for you if you're uncomfortable with the set-up of reality shows like The Bachelor, where a group of women vie for the attentions of one man. That's the backdrop here, and even though the film seems to want to poke fun at the formula, it still follows it, objectifying the man (6-pack abs on the farm!) and pitting the women against each other (mud fight!). Doesn't mean you won't want the cowboy and the small-town family girl with big dreams to make it—just that you already know they will.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the portrayal of reality TV in The Wrong Paris. Do you think what you see on screen in reality shows like The Bachelor is real? Does it tell the whole story?
Why does Trey make the decision he does about Dawn on the show? What about his proposal at the end—does he do the right thing? Does she?
What stereotypes about Texas or male-female relationships do you see in this film? Explain. Why are stereotypes damaging?
