A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this movie.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that This is Christmas is a well-meaning British romcom that has its heart in the right place and thrives in the spirit of the festive period. Central to the story is the claim that strangers are just friends you haven't made yet. While it does address some of the cynicism associated with this premise, it's also unashamed in its approach. It's helped along by central character Adam (Alfred Enoch) who is sincere, earnest, and good-natured. His demeanor and optimistic outlook on life is infectious. He tries to find the best in everything and everyone, and strikes up a romance with fellow train passenger Emma (Kaya Scodelario) -- they share a kiss. The movie celebrates the sense of local community and getting to know your neighbors. Swearing is only occasional, but there is some use of "s--t" and "bastard." Characters are often seen drinking at home and outside at social events, but never to excess. The film's diverse cast is reflective of modern Britain, especially that of London.
What's the Story?
THIS IS CHRISTMAS tells the story of Adam (Alfred Enoch), who takes the same lengthy commute from his small village to London every day for work. Seeing the same faces twice a day, he feels compelled to one day stand up and introduce himself to his fellow passengers. With Christmas approaching, he invites them all to a party, and while the reception is lukewarm, Emma (Kaya Scodelario) seems rather keen on the idea -- and on Adam.
Is It Any Good?
This British festive romcom wears its heart on its sleeve and subsequently may be accused by some of being overly-sentimental. While it's undeniable This is Christmas is somewhat mawkish, it remains watchable thanks to the sheer likability of its leading man. Enoch's Adam has such an ingrained sense of earnestness that it is impossible not to get swept up with it. When Adam stands up on a train and invites his fellow passengers to a party, instead of being unbearable -- which would be the normal response if this were real life -- it is instead rather charming.
If you're able to leave any cynicism at the door and can get into the festive spirit, this is a film that will leave you feeling warm and cosy. Though just for the record, it's still unadvisable to attend any party that a random person on the train invites you to. Sorry, Adam.
