What's the Story?

In the vast forests of India, a female TIGER has recently birthed an unusually large litter of four cubs. We are told by narrator Priyanka Chopra Jonas that the tiger's name is Ambar, and she will need to nurse and protect her cubs for months before they can eat solid foods or hunt on their own. She will also need to hunt for meat to keep up her milk supply, leaving her cubs alone at times. The cubs are in regular danger from other predators, including the king of the forest, male tiger Shankar. We watch as Ambar navigates her environment and Shankar, and as the cubs grow to full size.

You don't have to feel any natural affinity or curiosity for the wild animals of the Indian forest to be drawn into this gorgeous documentary. That's because the makers of Tiger, like other Disneynature films, have a winning combination of extensive never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes footage, and an engaging voice-over by a celebrity (in this case, India-born Priyanka Chopra Jonas). They've managed to put cameras inside caves, zoom in on intimate moments, and capture action sequences from afar, putting us right there as a forest-full of animals go about their lives.

To accompany the impressive footage, the filmmakers craft a story full of wonderment, natural beauty, and also death, humanizing their subjects and setting their daily actions to evocative music for easier understanding. For example, when mama tiger Ambar finds two cubs missing, Chopra Jonas tells us how she must be feeling as a melancholy tune plays in the background. Do tigers feel sadness the way we do? This is something scientists might not be able to tell us, but the footage shared here (gathered from over 1,500 days in the wild) offers plenty of insights and memorable views of truly stunning creatures.
