Tomorrow X Together: Our Lost Summer
What's the Story?
TOMORROW X TOGETHER: OUR LOST SUMMER follows the Korean pop band, also known as TXT, on their 2022 world tour, which culminates with a performance at Lollapalooza. It's their first tour after the pandemic and following their debut showcase three years earlier. The tour takes band members Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai from Seoul to seven different American cities. Along the way, they talk about their feelings about the tour and the work that goes into their success.
Is It Any Good?
After recent films on Suga, j-hope, BTS, Blackpink, and more, it seems you can't make it as a K-pop band without a documentary. The problem is the saturation, and Tomorrow X Together: Our Lost Summer isn't likely to draw anyone other than serious fans. Truth be told, they won't miss much. Talking heads offer mostly superficial reactions to a tour that took place two years ago. We see performances, but never in full. Drama is drummed up in the form of members' bouts of illness and a nosebleed.
The film's more interesting contribution involves insights into Korean corporate pop bands. The members of TXT work nonstop year-round ("we don't have seasons -- we're always in the studio") to perfect their artistry. They're referred to as "trainees" and one "leader," and their handlers review each performance immediately after they come off stage to find areas for improvement. One member admits he feels "awkward" when he doesn't have choreographed steps to follow. The packaging seems to be the key to TXT's success -- this film included.
