Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Shortly before their bar mitzvah, the young Rubén (Milo Burgess-Webb) announces they will no longer go by their birth name since they identify as a girl named Mumy, after their late grandmother. To the disappointment of her family, Mumy leaves and becomes a famous Yiddish singer, who as an adult (Penélope Guerrero) travels back to Buenos Aires determined to reclaim her identity as a Jew by having a TRANSMITZVAH.
Is It Any Good?
"I don't need to be tolerated. I'm neither gluten or lactose" says Mumy (Penélope Guerrero), the fierce heroine of Daniel Burman's enchanting new dramedy. Watching Guerrero as the lead in Transmitzvah isn't radical merely for what it means for Argentinean and Latin American cinema (a story about a trans woman's faith!) but for the promising future it holds for narratives that in the past have mostly been dedicated to exploring pain and loss.
Although pain and loss are part of Mumy's story, she is far too fabulous (she's described in the film as a "Yiddish diva") to let the mundane bring her down, and aided by a screenplay and direction that choose to celebrate her in every scene, she leads a story about the ability to be reborn in one's own beliefs about oneself. The tale will most likely be inspirational for people of all ages, who in Mumy will find a heroine for the ages.
