Truth & Treason
What's the Story?
Based on real events, TRUTH & TREASON follows 16-year-old Helmuth Hübener (Ewan Horrocks), the youngest intern at Hanover City Hall in Nazi Germany. While apprenticing in the city's social administration, Helmuth is appalled to see the bishop of his Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints post a "Jews forbidden to enter" sign—an act that ostracizes Helmuth's close friend, Salomon (Nye Occomore), a Mormon of Jewish descent. After Salomon's arrest and deportation by the Nazis, Helmuth is determined to fight back any way he can. Using his access to banned books at work and a hidden shortwave radio his brother smuggled home from the front, Helmuth begins secretly writing and distributing anti-Nazi leaflets. Enlisting his loyal friends Rudi (Daf Thomas) and Karl-Heinz (Ferdinand McKay), Helmuth spreads messages of truth and defiance throughout the city, even as SS officer Erwin Mussener (Rupert Evans) grows increasingly obsessed with catching the mysterious resistance writer he assumes must be an adult academic, not a teen boy.
Is It Any Good?
This inspiring, well-acted biographical drama sheds light on the little-known story of a young resistance writer in Nazi Germany. Horrocks delivers a nuanced performance in Truth & Treason as Helmuth, whose youthful optimism (and occasional naivete) fuels his dangerous mission to spread truth via underground leaflets. As his foil, Evans is equally compelling as an SS officer whose moral certainty begins to waver when he discovers that his elusive target isn't a dissident professor but a devout teenage boy. It's an unusual choice for a filmmaker to humanize a Nazi, much less a hardened SS officer, but this fictionalized character underscores how even a devoted follower of a toxic ideology can begin to question the lies they've been taught not to question.
It's a slight disappointment that viewers learn so little about Helmuth's friend Salomon, whose deportation serves as the story's catalyst, though the end credits do provide closure. Likewise, the screenplay could have delved deeper into why Rudi and Karl-Heinz risked everything to join Helmuth's cause, since their motivations and home lives remain largely unexplored. Despite these shortcomings, the movie effectively prompts reflection on faith, resistance, and courage in the face of tyranny. Helmuth's conviction that unjust laws must be challenged offers a timeless message of integrity, activism, and hope. In the genre of Christian faith-based dramas, Truth & Treason stands out as a moving tribute to the power of resistance and the extraordinary bravery of ordinary people who risked their lives for their beliefs.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the violence in Truth & Treason. Does realistic violence have a different impact than stylized violence?
Do people have a responsibility to follow unjust laws? Why does Helmuth feel he's doing what's "right," even if it's technically illegal?
Why do you think the filmmakers humanized the fictional SS officer? Why was that necessary to the story?
In what ways does the movie prompt viewers to ask questions about both history and contemporary society?
The main character is a teenager facing enormous, life-or-death stakes. How does his youth impact the story? Do you want to learn more about the real Helmuth Hübener?
