Tyler Perry's A Madea Homecoming
What's the Story?
Tim (Brandon Black), the great-grandson of matriarch Madea (Tyler Perry), is graduating top of his class from an HBCU in TYLER PERRY'S A MADEA HOMECOMING. He's coming home for a graduation party with his roommate Davi (Isha Blaaker), whose Irish relatives, Cathy (Jennifer Gibney) and Aunt Brown (Brendan O'Carroll), show up out of nowhere. Both boys are embarrassed by their older relatives, particularly Uncle Joe's (also Perry) inappropriate shenanigans. Tim has a big announcement to make to his family, but he doesn't expect the announcements they have in store for him, especially from his mom, Laura (Gabrielle Dennis) and dad, Richard (Amani Atkinson). Aunt Bam (Cassi Davis), Mr. Brown, and Cora (played by real-life couple David and Tamela J. Mann) are along for the ride.
Is It Any Good?
The Madea films are all about the characters; they have their audience and the latest installment will be no different. But definitely don't come to Tyler Perry's A Madea Homecoming looking for much beyond the usual trash-talking and crass humor. The film takes place almost entirely in one setting -- Madea's house. There are some very funny moments, like confusion over an Irish character (a hilarious Brendan O'Carroll as Madea's White counterpart), whose localisms are misinterpreted: "knickers" sounds like the "N" word, and she uses unintentionally-charged terms like "cotton-picking" and "proud boy." The film conveys a couple of political messages about Black Lives Matter, accepting gay people, and supporting rather than defunding police. Madea's folksy life lessons once again communicate that love and family are more important than anything else.

Some of the humor in the Madea series is intentionally offensive. Does this work for the characters, or do you think it turns off some potential viewers? Why?
