What's the Story?

Young and talented dancer Andre Oliveira is the focus of UNCREDITED: THE STORY OF PASSINHO. Like other greats in the art of the Rio slum-born dance form Passinho, he strives to give it honor and legitimacy by performing and doing battles and duels to spread its greatness. When the Red Bull Dance Your Style international dance contest comes to Brazil, he trains with friends to be his best. He is endearing and sweet, nice to his supportive mom, good to his friends, and respectful of "elder" dancers who came before him when the dance began around 2000. His hard work culminates in a fun dance-off.

The film takes us into the lives of agile, talented dancers who recognize the art of their movement and want their dance genre to gain recognition and legitimacy in the larger world. Andre could not be a more attractive ambassador and advocate for Passinho. The close-knit community is so invested in his success that some say that when he wins a contest it feels as if they too have won. The movie's greater message is that sometimes poor communities are maligned, as if poverty is their own fault. Here, the Passinho dancers say they are proud to be from the favela. One says he couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
