What's the Story?

In UNLEASHING HOPE: THE POWER OF SERVICE DOGS FOR AUTISM, parents—including former TV host Rosie O'Donnell—recount their experiences bringing home service dogs for their children with autism. The dogs form part of a program that enrolls incarcerated men to help train the dogs. Eventually, the dogs are taken home to families, where they provide companionship to kids with autism. Parents talk about the life-changing ways the dogs help their children and families. The trainers also share how much working with the dogs has meant to them during their time in prison.

This short documentary tells the emotional parallel stories of two populations assisted by service dogs: incarcerated men, and children with autism (and their families). Unleashing Hope: The Power of Service Dogs for Autism contains many poignant moments and scenes. As producer and protagonist, O'Donnell may have been essential in getting this film made, but she's not the star. That role rests with the kids—namely, Kaleb and Clay—and their parents, who share their experiences with striking clarity and honesty. The film is also just the right length. Many 90-plus-minute documentaries could take note of how succinctly this film weaves its story and gets its messages across in half the time.
