Untold: The Fall of Favre
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In UNTOLD: THE FALL OF FAVRE, the rise and fall of Brett Favre takes center stage. Establishing how beloved Favre is in Wisconsin, this documentary explores the consequences of allowing a sports star to get away with inappropriate and possibly illegal behavior. Large portions of this film are devoted to Favre's stalking, harassment, and abuse of Jenn Sterger and Favre's scamming millions of dollars from Mississippi's TANF funds for needy families. Will the public continue to give Favre a pass because "they want their heroes"? Or will the public start to recognize that actions sometimes speak louder than words?
Is It Any Good?
Director Rebecca Gitlitz doesn't hold back from this takedown of Brett Favre. Thankfully, in Untold: The Fall of Favre, his storied career and the "rise" part of his "rise and fall" is briefly covered. The majority of this documentary smartly focuses on the two scandals that Favre has seemingly escaped facing responsibility for—although, he is still a defendant in the civil lawsuit brought against him by the Mississippi Department of Human Services. It fairly and accurately describes Jenn Sterger's mistreatment by Favre and by the press and public after that scandal broke. Sadly, her career was forever damaged by it, while Favre continues to enjoy a profitable post-football career. But maybe this film will help to slowly change popular opinion.
Throughout, this takedown wouldn't work if it didn't 100% have the evidence to back it. Gitlitz almost academically shows Favre's own emails, texts, and voicemail recordings, and dozens of people knowledgeable of Favre's fault in these scandals. Gitlitz also points the finger at the public and the fans who continue to give Favre a pass and excuse any wrongdoing or inappropriate behavior because he "was such a great football player." Which, of course, raises the question: Would a great dentist or lawyer or teacher be allowed to do what Favre has done because they were simply great dentists, lawyers, or teachers? The lesson and certain takeaway here is to always be mindful of your heroes. And heroes, always try to keep in mind your humanity and humility.
