#UNTRUTH: The Psychology of Trumpism
What's the Story?
#UNTRUTH: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF TRUMPISM offers a condensed but detailed history of the rise of Donald Trump's popularity in politics and draws parallels to authoritarian leadership cults. The featured experts and politicians argue that Trump and his most fervent followers are undermining the very fabric of American democracy, and they warn that Trump won't stop until he becomes a dictator. But the experts also make the point that it's important to stay in contact with family and friends who lean into Trumpism, connecting with them on other topics, finding common ground, and staying open to them as they come to their own conclusions about what Trump has told them about the country. Compassion, empathy and openness, the interviewees say, are the key tools to defending against authoritarianism if they're used consistently.
Is It Any Good?
This is a scary, stark documentary that argues Donald Trump has steered the United States firmly on the path toward authoritarianism. #UNTRUTH: The Psychology of Trumpism also makes the case for how Trump could further alter the country's future if he's given the chance to lead it again. The experts and politicians from both sides of the aisle who are interviewed for the film provide context and background on Trump's rise to power and how he follows the framework that other authoritarian leaders have used to build a volatile base of supporters. Even though the film is a warning about what could happen under a second Trump presidency, the experts also urge compassion and empathy toward family and friends who support him. Constant communication is what's most likely to reach people who are potentially under dangerous sway, and fostering community can undermine the forces that are leaning toward authoritarian rule.
