What's the Story?
WASTEMAN finds Taylor (David Jonsson) on the brink of being released from a men's prison. Determined to make amends for past mistakes and be a good father to his estranged son, his imminent release is jeopardized with the introduction of a new cellmate. Dee (Tom Blyth) is hellbent on securing his status as the top dog on the prison wing, selling drugs and inciting violence, implicating Taylor in the process.
Is It Any Good?
This is a brilliant but excruciating piece of contemporary British filmmaking and one that rarely lets up. The claustrophobic intimacy between Taylor and his volatile cellmate Dee in Wasteman generates an atmosphere of unrelenting tension. It's the kind of film that leaves you needing to decompress afterward. Jonsson brings genuine warmth to Taylor, making him deeply sympathetic, while Blyth is pure menace as Dee—two performances that anchor the film's intensity. This is undoubtedly worth seeing, but viewers should be prepared: it's a genuinely difficult watch.
