Jagged Mind
What's the Story?
In JAGGED MIND, Billie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) believes she's suffering from dementia, like her mother did, because she's having memory troubles. But there's something suspicious about her blackouts, and she has vague recollections of being yelled at by her girlfriend Alex (Shannon Woodward) and injured. Her friend Kim (Kate Szekely) and local artist Rose (Shein Mompremier) seem to be suggesting Alex is not to be trusted, and a man who might be a voodoo priest, Papa Juste (Jimmy Jean-Louis), appears to be reaching out to her. Meanwhile, former fling Christine (Rosaline Elbay) has mysteriously disappeared.
Is It Any Good?
While the female-driven cast and Little Haiti setting are refreshing, this film is ultimately a flawed attempt at a psychological thriller. Both the violence and the characters' motivations in Jagged Mind feel artificial, and some scenes have a definitively B-movie look. Richardson-Sellers gives her all as the victim of strange curses, and she has a compelling on-screen presence -- as does the steamy, vibrant-colored Miami location. There's on- and off-camera talent here, but the final product falls a little short.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the concept of curses, as seen in Jagged Mind. Do you believe it might be possible to control time, like Alex does through the use of a crystal?
