What’s It About?
On EAT YOUR SPANISH, Evan and Vanessa apply their musical talent and Montessori-based training to Spanish language lessons. Each episode features a theme, such as the days of the week, that runs through the songs and stories. Original characters Mr. Mouse and Mrs. Elephant appear in nearly every episode, starring in narratives that expand on a given theme. Addressing listeners as their "amigos" or "friends," Evan and Vanessa maintain an open familiarity with listeners. Their friendly approach to the material -- in addition to steady repetition and bilingual presentation -- make it perfectly digestible for most age groups. Eat Your Spanish releases a variety of episode formats, including lessons, lesson reviews, and specials, such as those focusing on specific Spanish-language songs. Moreover, Evan and Vanessa designed the show to be experienced in release order, as lessons build upon each other. At the moment, episodes are posted every two weeks.
Is It Any Good?
It's hard to find a Spanish-language podcast as tailor-made for younger listeners as this. The hosts of Eat Your Spanish, Evan and Vanessa, create a warm and nurturing environment designed to draw in their audience. Their well-timed, flawlessly produced program uses a variety of approaches -- including repetition, bilingual presentation, music, and lessons reviews -- to ensure kids stay engaged. Tuning in can be a great way for young listeners to learn Spanish on their own or together with their caregivers.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Eat Your Spanish uses music to enhance the learning experience. Is it easier to absorb a given lesson when it's accompanied by music? If so, why?
Mr. Mouse and Mrs. Elephant couldn't be more different. Yet, they make their friendship work anyway. Is there anyone in listeners' lives who offers them a perspective radically different from their own?
Learning a new language is a valuable skill. What is one real-life situation where knowing some Spanish would have proven useful?
How does Eat Your Spanish foster character strengths like compassion or communication? What other ways can kids continue building those skills outside this podcast?
