What's It About?

JOURNEY WITH STORY host Kathleen T. Pelley shares "classic folk tales, fairytales, and original stories from all around the world" in every episode. The lessons vary from story to story, but Kathleen always helps contextualize them for younger listeners. What connects them all is the importance of storytelling and how it runs across the globe, no matter where someone comes from.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Journey with Story features a wide range of stories, as told by host Kathleen T. Pelley. But the show doesn't offer a whole lot more for listeners. After all, the podcasting world has no shortage of storytelling podcasts, and though Kathleen's Scottish lilt and voice acting make it a pleasant listening experience, that alone doesn't necessarily make this a must-listen show for families.

The emphasis Journey with Story places on including stories from around the globe is admirable, and the audio production -- which features complementary sound effects and music -- is solid overall, even if it's not as pristine as it could be. For listeners simply looking for a way to expose young listeners to a range of classic and original tales, Journey with Story should fulfill that need nicely.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how Journey with Story's episodes often include lessons specifically for kids. How can fables and fairy tales be more effective at getting a message across rather than explaining it directly?

  • Some stories featured on Journey with Story are darker in nature and even feature warnings to keep younger listeners away. Is it ever worth introducing children to such stories at an early age? If so, why? Read episode descriptions to understand what's in the episode and decide if it's appropriate for your child.

  • Were there any new stories you heard in the podcast? Where were these stories from? Can you learn more about the countries some of these stories are from and the meaning they have in different cultures?
