What's It About?
YEAH NO, I'M NOT OK is a self-help podcast geared toward people of color since they've not traditionally received resources or support for mental health concerns. Host Diane Guerrero invites a diverse group of guests to share their stories with trauma or addiction whether it's their personal struggle or that of a loved one. Famous guests include Demi Lovato, René Perez Joglas (AKA Residente), and Jermaine Fowler. Opinions about mature themes including suicide, drug use, and depression are shared openly and sometimes in detail (razor blades, selling cocaine).
Is It Any Good?
With powerful messages of resilience and strength in facing mental health issues, listeners hear raw and unvarnished stories of how some people have dealt with mental health issues. Yeah No, I'm Not OK shares some challenges related to addiction and depression experienced by Guerrero and her guests (including Lovato, Residente, and Fowler) as well as call-in listeners. Guerrero sensitively asks questions that help listeners hear guests' perspectives. These open conversations of difficult subjects have the potential to help listeners create a path to personal understanding and healing. Though several episodes focus on the hardship and trauma caused by addiction, some guests openly share that they use drugs recreationally. It's important to know that the message is reinforced that recreational drug use (including cocaine or heroin) is a reasonable alternative to coping with life's challenges.
Yeah No, I'm Not OK is focused on sharing supportive resources with people of color (Latino and Black), because they have historically had limited access to them. It's important to know that the show is conversational and reflective and shares some controversial ideas; it's informative, but it isn't an educational resource.
