What's the Story?
1992 follows Amparo (Marián Álvarez) in the tragic aftermath of her husband's death in a mysterious explosion. Determined to uncover the truth, she teams up with Richi (Fernando Valdivielso), an ex-cop and her late husband's best friend. Their investigation leads them to a series of gruesome murders, each marked by the presence of a Curro figurine—the iconic mascot of the 1992 Seville Expo—left beside the burned victim. They continue on a labyrinth of political corruption, personal vendettas, and long-buried secrets and navigate a complex web of darkness to stop the murderer before more lives get claimed.
Is It Any Good?
This murder mystery combined with psychological horror has entertaining melodramatic vibes and an extravagant visual style. 1992 shows its ambition in tackling many things at once: genre experimentations, large-scale explosions, and serious social commentary on political corruption and the overall dark side of our world. And it uses the Curro mascot from the 1992 Seville Expo as a grotesque symbol of the Spanish society's lack of morals and general greed.
But the series bites off more than it can chew, as the plot goes into too many directions without tying up all the loose ends. For a thriller, many of its scares turn out to be unintentionally funny, and this takes away from a satisfying viewing experience. In addition, none of the major performances manage to convey the complex emotions that the script intends.
