What's the Story?

90 Minutos, aka 90 MINUTES, is a Mexican dramatic comedy about a struggling football (soccer) team and the fight to save it. Auto mechanic Gil Gordillo (Álvaro Guerrero) lives in the outskirts of México City in (fictional) Ecatepec, and is the proud owner of Las Navajas FC, the municipality's once victorious amateur football club. The club's current players, Gama (Mario Alberto Monroy), renaissance man Zindedin (Adrian Vazquez), exotic dancer Roca (Pierre Louis), the singing hopeful known as XX (Isaac Bravo), and Gandhi (Juan Pablo De Santiago) aren't very good, but to Don Gil, Las Navajas are the most important thing he has in the world. This can be frustrating for his adult daughter Alma (Teresa Ruiz) and grandson Dany (Diego Guzmán), who recently relocated from the United States to help him after his wife left him indefinitely. But when a post-match riot against a rival club owned by aspiring gangster Yuriel Santana (Raúl Méndez) leads to a fine of 100,000 pesos each, Don Gil is faced with the potential dissolution of his beloved club. Luckily, Las Navajas believe in their ability to become champions and plan to win the amateur tournament to get the cash. To improve their chances of victory, Don Gil recruits former star footballer and local bartender Veneno Montoya (José María de Tavira) as their coach. As Las Navajas practice, bicker, and play while navigating the tough road to victory, Yuriel Santana has his own plans for Ecatepec that will also affect the club's future.

The irreverent dramatic comedy offers well-written and well-timed humor while delivering earnest and heartfelt moments. Granted, the 90 Minutes plotline about the underdog sports team trying to win isn't particularly original, but the interactions among the colorful footballers create lots of laugh-out-loud moments. Although the team is chaotic and far from perfect, you can't help but root for Las Navajas because of their love for the game, and their loyalty to the club and to each other. It's a fun football journey, but 90 Minutes is also a story about the love of family, whether it be biological or social, and the sustaining role it has in our lives. You don't have to be a football fan to find this edgy series entertaining.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the global popularity of European football (aka soccer). Is it currently as popular in the United States as it is in the rest of the world? Why or why not?

  • In 90 Minutes, do Las Navajas play a positive role in the community? Or are they simply tolerated because they're a tradition?
