A Man in Full
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
A Man in Full finds successful real estate mogul Charlie Croker (Jeff Daniels) at a crisis point. When the bank comes after him to repay a $800,000 loan, he must figure out how to appease his adversaries and root out the traitors in his company or go bankrupt.
Is It Any Good?
Up until recently, the comedy of manners--a mini-genre which looked at class by focusing on the behavior of the extremely wealthy -- seemed like an antiquated concept. A Man in Full is the latest entry in this particular genre revival, which kicked off with the popularity of Succession and Parasite. However, this series fails because its central characters are simply not believable as wealthy elites. Its central character, Charlie Croker, throws a birthday party in which Shania Twain shows up to perform, but the series never shows him actually flourishing; he's not visibly good at anything in the way of business and neither are any of the characters around him.
There's an old showbiz adage that the way to play a king is to have everyone around you kneel, but nobody here is kneeling. So, it's a drama about the highest possible financial stakes, but it feels like it could just as easily be set in an Arby's.
