What's the Story?

A MAN ON THE INSIDE follows Charles (Ted Danson), a widower still grieving the death of his wife after a year. After his daughter, Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), encourages him to get out of the house, he answers an ad in the newspaper looking for someone to go undercover in a retirement community to find a jewel thief. It's the first step in letting Charles meet people like private investigator Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) and kindred spirit Calbert (Stephen McKinley Henderson), plus many more, all of whom help him discover his new lease on life—and who he helps in return.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Some Michael Schur comedies (Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) took a year or two to find their comedic voices; this streaming show doesn't have that luxury, and the comic rhythm isn't quite right at first. But everything else in A Man on the Inside is thoughtful and ingenious, and the series eventually finds its groove. Targeting a similar audience as Only Murders in the Building, both cozy mysteries have great premises. Better yet, A Man on the Inside focuses on character development over its cases, and Danson is incredibly charming as his character navigates aging, grief, and other life changes. The result is an immensely likable show that doesn't elicit the biggest laughs, but that will most certainly leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling.
