What's the Story?

A THOUSAND BLOWS is based on true events that occurred in the dark world of London's East End. It's the 1800's, and Hezekiah Muscow (Malachi Kirby) comes to London from Jamaica with big dreams of becoming a professional lion tamer. When he and best friend Alec (Francis Lovehall) struggle to score housing due to prejudice, Hezekiah has the bright idea to enter his friend into the dark world of competitive boxing. Meanwhile Mary Carr (Erin Doherty,) Queen of the Forty Elephants (the largest female street gang in the area) tries to plan her largest heist ever. But her high-profile plan comes with a high risk, and potential business partner Lao (Jason Tobin) wants out. When Hezekiah uncovers that his lion tamer dreams were under a façade of discrimination, he decides to step into the ring with the undefeatable Sugar Goodson (Stephen Graham.)

This series packs a fast-paced, historical punch. A Thousand Blows is dark, intriguing, and thrilling. Kirby, Graham, and Doherty deliver complex performances in the anxiety inducing environment of East End. This series, like its creator's earlier exploration of another dark historical world, Peaky Blinders, is for mature audiences only.
