What's the Story?
Growing up in ACAPULCO, Mexico, Maximo (Enrique Arrizon) has dreamed of working in resorts all his life. When he finally talks his way into a job as a cabana boy, Maximo discovers that resort life is more complicated than he ever imagined.
Is It Any Good?
Apple+ seems to have realized viewers' need for what used to be a backhanded compliment: feel-good television. Acapulco is wildly different from breakout hit Ted Lasso, but it's compelling for many of the same reasons. The characters are likable, even when in conflict, because they care genuinely for others. The resort comedy is arguably even more ambitious, focusing on Mexican culture in a way that American television rarely does.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what appeals to the main character about working at the resort. How does his actual experience compare to his perception?
What ethical questions does Maximo confront at work? What choices does he make? How does he arrive at those choices? What do his choices say about him?
How does Acapulco explore Latino culture? What are some examples of cultural differences in Acapulco? How do they affect the story?
How do you think Maximo will end up becoming wealthy? What clues does the show give? Do you think present-day Maximo still has the same value system as young Maximo? Why or why not?
