What's the Story?

ALL OR NOTHING: THE GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM IN QATAR follows the German men's national football (soccer) team's journey during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. After devastating losses at the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 European Championship, Coach Hansi Flick is expecting the team to restore itself to its former glory by winning the 2022 championship. But their losses have translated into less confidence, which has affected their ability to play consistently well. Their losing streak has also resulted in the loss of supportive fans. The political controversies surrounding Qatar, and the FIFA ban on wearing anything that they deem "political," also leads to distractions. As cameras follow the team before, during, and after the championship, Coach Flick, Managing Director Oliver Bierhoff, and some of the players share their thoughts about what was happening and why.

This installment of the All or Nothing franchise tells the frustrating story of the 2022 German national football team, which garnered as much media attention for taking a stand against Qatar's human rights violations as they did for failing to qualify for the final 16. But All or Nothing: The German National Team in Qatar is also about a football team that has lost its mojo, and can't seem to find it despite its hard work and love for the sport. Stateside soccer fans may find themselves getting exasperated when watching scenes of poorly played matches, while others may feel sympathy for the players when things just seem to fall apart from one moment to the next. But the overall series offers an important behind-the-scenes look at what it's like when playing elite sports isn't yielding success.
