Am I Being Unreasonable?
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Written by and starring Daisy May Cooper as Nic, and Selin Hizli as Jen, AM I BEING UNREASONABLE? begins with Nic's life unsettled. She can't stand her husband Dan (Dustin Demri-Burns), she feels left out of the mom's clique at son Ollie's (Lenny Rush) school, and her cat's missing. She's also grieving a loss that she can't reveal to anyone. When Jen shows up at school one day, the pair become instant best friends, but each are keeping secrets that won't stay hidden long.
Is It Any Good?
A curious and compelling artifact from England, this breath-of-fresh-air series turns on the prodigious charms (and writing talents) of Cooper and Selin Hizli. The chemistry between these two is extraordinary. They seem, and feel, like two ordinary hard partying moms; an early scene in which the pair bond over shots, wine, singing, and dancing at Nic's house is a wonder, both for how funny and joyous it is and for the small, unsettling bits of information that are dropped on behalf of each. It's both fascinating and a little sad, because Jen and Nic seem like such natural friends, and might have been, if they each didn't harbor some very dark secrets.
Nonetheless, Am I Being Unreasonable? is still lots of fun, and a quick binge you probably won't be able to stop yourself from taking if you watch the first episode. Daisy May Cooper is well-known in her native UK (mostly for a beloved comedy, This Country, which she created and starred in with her brother Charlie), but just broke in the United States with Rain Dogs on HBO. Am I Being Unreasonable? shows she has a gift for both loose, realistic, character-anchored comedy and twisty mystery, making Cooper a very welcome guest on stateside screens. Long may she reign.

Families can also talk about what type of show this is. Is it a crime drama? A fantasy? A comedy? Can you think of other TV shows and movies that mix genres to create a unique style? How does the show's humor impact the effect of the violence and suspense?
Many shows begin with a character new to a setting or situation being shown around. Why? Name some examples you've seen. How does Am I Being Unreasonable? use Jen to give us a window into Nic's world?
