What's the Story?

AMERICAN MANHUNT: O.J. SIMPSON, an installment of the American Manhunt franchise, revisits the late NFL player O.J. Simpson's controversial murder case and the legacy it left behind. On June 12, 1994, in Brentwood, California, a dog's bloody paws led to the discovery of the mutilated bodies of O.J. Simpson's estranged wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend Ron Goldman. Thirty years later the four-part documentary series revisits the details surrounding the case, and offers new information and insights about the dramatic events that unfolded. Through extensive archive footage, along with conversations with witnesses like Bettina Rasmussen and Kato Kaelin, former L.A.P.D. detectives Tom Lange and Mark Furhman, former Los Angeles prosecutor Christopher Darden, and Carl Douglas, a member of O.J. Simpson's defense team, viewers learn details about the investigation, Simpson's dramatic arrest, and the strategies lawyers used in the courtroom. Yolanda Crawford, a juror on the case, shares the impact these conversations had on the jury's overall understanding of what happened and their subsequent decision to acquit. The successful civil suit filed against Simpson in 1997 by the victims' families and his 2008 Nevada conviction for armed robbery are also discussed. Meanwhile, folks like Kim Goldman (Ron Goldman's sister) and Mike Gilbert, Simpson's former sports agent and friend, offer key details and personal insights about what it was like living through the experience, and the long-term impact it has had on their lives. Throughout it all, the documentary also discusses the public's fascination with the trial and how media fueled it.

The true crime docuseries combines insights and sensational details to create a compelling narrative about who O.J. Simpson was and how his legacy defines the 1990s. Much of American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson centers on whether or not he killed Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, and highlights the key arguments made about guilt and innocence in and outside of the courtroom. As in most series of this type, there are some tabloid-like moments, especially when gruesome photographs of the victims are repeatedly shown, accompanied by detailed descriptions about how they died. Audio recordings documenting Nicole Brown's 911 calls and Simpson's violent behaviors are also disturbing.

But the interviews with those who were associated with the 11-month-long murder trial back in 1995 are what make the series worth watching. These conversations break down how celebrity, race, and media were central to the case, and how triangulating these things created the chaos necessary to lose sight of the victims' story. They also reveal some surprising, and in some cases shocking, details about Simpson that will either confirm or challenge what people think about him. However, the most significant point made in American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson is how the deaths of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman forced conversations about domestic violence, systemic racism, and media sensationalism into the public discourse, inviting us to think about the relevance of these issues today.
