American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
AMERICAN MANHUNT: OSAMA BIN LADEN is a three-part docuseries featuring the people responsible for finding the man who masterminded the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The show includes interviews with CIA analysts from the Counterterrorism Center (CTC), FBI special agents, journalists, and an array of high-ranking officials from intelligence and government agencies like President George Bush's daily intelligence briefer Michael Morell, former Secretary of Defense Henry A. Crumpton, and former CIA Director Leon Panetta. It chronicles the nearly decade-long global hunt for bin Laden and his inner circle, including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the principal architect of 9/11. Details are offered about the initial efforts to find bin Laden by only using air strikes to invade Afghanistan in October 2001, which resulted in his escape to Pakistan and the global proliferation of al-Qaeda bases. It also reveals how years of bad intel (some of which was acquired from prisoners of war in Guantanamo Bay using "enhanced interrogation tactics") led to dead ends and catastrophic global events that prolonged what was referred to as the "War on Terror." Key moments and successes that ultimately led to bin Laden's demise are discussed. Former SEAL Team Six member Robert O'Neill, the man known for firing the fatal shot at the al-Qaeda leader, talks about how they prepared for, and successfully completed, their mission without American casualties. Throughout it all, previously shown archive media, reenactments, and rare, never-before-seen footage help round out the narrative.
Is It Any Good?
The three-part docuseries combines details with a little drama to recreate the sense of loss and urgency associated with 9/11 and the nearly 10-year pursuit of Osama bin Laden. While interviews reveal the strategies used to disrupt al-Qaeda's operational capabilities and subsequently neutralize the organization's leader, they also highlight the years of hard work and sacrifice of the individuals involved in the day-to-day efforts to find him, whether it be in Washington D.C. or in the Middle East. It also revisits some of the high-profile moments during the manhunt, such as the Battle of Tora Bora in 2001 and the 2009 suicide attack at Forward Operating Base Chapman in Khost, Afghanistan, which killed seven CIA operatives and uncovered the intelligence failures and vulnerabilities in their global counterterrorism operations.
Added to this is frank commentary about ethically questionable actions taken by the U.S. during the "War on Terror," including knowingly killing thousands of innocent Afghani civilians during air strikes and violating international law by torturing prisoners of war. There's no doubt that those who remember 9/11 and the years that followed will find parts of this difficult or frustrating to watch. Nonetheless, American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden does an excellent job of showcasing the people responsible for doing the intense and dangerous work that went into neutralizing the man globally known as the biggest threat to the United States for nearly a decade.
