What's the Story?

AMERICA'S TEAM: THE GAMBLER AND HIS COWBOYS is a six-part docuseries centered on the early-90s heyday of the Dallas Cowboys and their brash new owner, Arkansas oilman Jerry Jones. At the time he took over the franchise, the team was on a losing streak, and local fans were not optimistic about this "cornpone carpetbagger" swooping in to take charge — but the team turned things around in a massive way, becoming the first to win three Super Bowls in a four-year span. The story is told through archival footage and present-day interviews with Jones himself, plus sports reporters and legendary football players like Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and Deion Sanders.

This entertaining series echoes the Michael Jordan doc The Last Dance in that it had to be approved by its subject for the filmmakers to gain access, but its subject has drawn far more controversy. America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys attempts to mythologize the businessman while glossing over more problematic topics, like the racially fraught allegations involving a young Jones that surfaced a few years ago. Despite this, there are some standout moments (especially anecdotes from the players), and even non-sports fans could find themselves getting wrapped up in the drama.
