What's the Story?

In ANIELA (Małgorzata Kożuchowska), a glamorous Warsaw socialite goes into a downward spiral after she stabs her husband Jan (Jacek Poniedziałek) during a meltdown. Disgraced and penniless, she's forced to move into a run-down housing complex and confront life without wealth, status, or allies. As she schemes her way back into society, she crosses paths with eccentric neighbors, old enemies, and her own vanity.

This dramedy satire wants to be a sharp, stylish character study of female rage and public disgrace––and on paper, the premise has promise. To some extent, it's refreshing to see Aniela centered on a deeply flawed, aging woman who refuses to soften or apologize. And Kożuchowska's lead performance is just solid enough to keep the character watchable, even if you don't root for her. The neo-noir visual style, with its moody lighting and sleek framing, gives the show a distinctive aesthetic.

But the execution is where the show falters. The script is clunky and overly soapy, with plot turns that feel both predictable and bizarre. Supporting performances are stiff or exaggerated, dragging the tone without smart humor. It eventually comes across as glossy trash: aesthetically bold, narratively messy, and emotionally hollow. Aniela knows what it wants to be, but lacks the craft to pull it off.
