This light-hearted drama anime stands apart for it's unique story and frank approach to discussing history and prejudice. Arte does a good job introducing young viewers to a different historical setting (Italian Renaissance). The dialogue and plot may be simplified or sometimes exaggerated, but the story doesn't romanticize history. Instead, it points out the very-real challenges of social and economic inequality.

Arte is a fully-developed, multidimensional character. She is a strong, inspiring female lead — but she also has realistic moments of doubt. She doesn't get "saved," and instead she must learn how to solve problems with her own wit, hard work, and social connections.

  • How is Arte able to make connections with people she disagrees with or whom look down on her at first? Why is it important to make connections with people we might not originally get along with or like?

  • How do Arte and her friends help each other? What do they learn from each other?
