What's the Story?

In ARUNA'S MAGIC, Mima feels like she doesn't belong. In a world where magic is thought to be gone, and darkness has literally taken over, she wants to win the Young Patron competition at school to make her adoptive parents proud. But destiny has bigger plans for her. When Mima accidentally awakens three witches who've been sleeping for 300 years, they reveal she's a descendant from a lost bloodline of magic and may be the only one who can bring back magic, the sun, and fairness to the world.

Is It Any Good?

The show has interesting ideas and perspectives, but doesn't quite hit the mark. Aruna's Magic explores mature themes and mirrors past persecution and current corporate greed. At the same time, it seems afraid of being too violent or scary, ending up with big setups that don't quite pay off. There's a constant sense of dread, but when the action seems ready to ramp up, it pulls back instead. Because of this, the series might appeal more to younger tweens, even if they don't fully understand the social commentary.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the duality in Aruna's Magic and how the villains were always bad—in the past and the present—while the heroes made no mistakes. Do you think that's true in real life?? Is there a character that shifts between both sides?

  • Even before Mima learned of her powers, she used her voice to evoke change as a Young Patron. How can you be a positive influence in your community?

  • Can you think of ways that knowing her origin has helped Mima understand who she is? Does it help her feel proud of her appearance, like the gold strand in her hair?
