What's the Story?
AT THE MOMENT is a 10-episode series from Taiwan that centers on the search for love and connection during the pandemic, and all the unique challenges that come with it. Each episode focuses on a different storyline, though many of them intersect and overlap in sometimes surprising ways. A recurring fixture in the series is a popular (fictional) reality show called New Tenants that focuses on roommates falling in love. The first episode highlights the romance between an aspiring musician and a barista who appear on the show, while a later installment shows the behind-the-scenes entanglements of the production team. The tone can vary wildly -- some episodes are goofy and light, while others are deep and mournful.
Is It Any Good?
The storylines may have benefitted from finding even more intersection points between each tale (it's always a fun "a-ha" moment when they pop up) but even as is, the premise feels fresh and clever. The anthology format means that episodes range in mood from straight-up comedic to mature and sexy to -- improbably -- mildly sci-fi. At The Moment is an ideal weekend binge watch, as the minute you might be getting a little impatient with one story, the next one pops up with a whole new mood, theme, and cast of characters. The COVID pandemic is a sort of background character here, in that it brings some challenges to the search for connection, but its inclusion doesn't ever feel gimmicky.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how the stories interconnect -- someone you see in an early episode may pop up later in the series and have an unexpected tie to the characters in that storyline. Can you think of other movies and TV shows that have taken a similar approach to storytelling?
Finding love can be challenging even when there isn't a global pandemic. How does life in quarantine complicate things for the characters in these stories?
