What's the Story?

In BARBIE AND STACIE to the rescue, Barbie's tween sister Stacie is frustrated with her in-between age. She's too old to be a little kid, but too young to be a teenager. Her feelings intensify when she learns that she can't be Barbie's hot-air balloon co-pilot because she's not old enough. Even worse, her family forgets about her and leaves her behind on the day of the hot-air balloon race. When Barbie and Skipper's balloon gets stuck on a tree, they're in real trouble. Is Stacie old enough to stay calm and help her big sisters down to safety?

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

This special Barbie "movie" is just fine. Barbie and Stacie to the Rescue is Stacie's first time in the spotlight, and Stacie's problems are very relatable to kids in the tween stage. The girl-power messages are positive, but seem a bit stuck in the self-esteem movement of the 90s. The characters express negative emotions, but they don't feel that real. The plot is extremely predictable and seems like it could have been condensed to a regular-length episode. The songs are lackluster and heavily auto-tuned. While there's nothing super negative in Barbie and Stacie to the Rescue, its lack of real substance makes it feel like a very long toy commercial.

  • Families can talk about how Stacie and Ligaya feel about being an "in-between" age. Are there things you like about your age? Are there things you wish you were different? Do you think being older is always better?

  • Families can talk about the messages behind the Barbie character. Do you know why some people don't like Barbie toys and movies that much? Do you think Barbie and Stacie to the Rescue has some of those same problems?
