What's the Story?

BEAR GRYLLS IS RUNNING WILD is a continuation of the outdoor survival TV tradition in which host Bear Grylls takes celebrities out of their comfort zones and into some of the most stunning and harsh environments on Earth. The premiere follows Grylls and actor Matthew McConaughey through the rugged landscape of Norway as they navigate extreme heights and talk about McConaughey's career and family. Later guests include Tiffany Haddish, Uma Thurman, Colman Domingo, and Elizabeth Banks.

The show follows a predictable but effective rhythm: intense, almost antagonistic daytime trekking followed by reflective campfire conversations. The tried-and-true formula of Bear Grylls Is Running Wild gets his celebrity guests to bond with him as they push their limits and experience natural highs in gorgeous surroundings. As a result, viewers are treated to lesser-known stories from the start of their careers or private lives. It's nothing groundbreaking, as far as the Bear Grylls franchise goes, but fans will be happy with this latest crop of A-list participants.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about courage. Matthew McConaughey talks through his fear during the 800-foot rappel. Is having courage the same thing as not being afraid, or is it doing the task even when you are nervous? How can acknowledging fear help you stay safe and focused?

  • Grylls and McConaughey talk about cynicism being a "disease of aging." What does it mean to keep a sense of wonder and curiosity as you get older, and why is that important? How can a positive attitude change how you face a difficult challenge?
