What's the Story?

In Vinylville, where bear Jasmine Finch lives, people follow the rules. The biggest rule of all? On high school graduation day, you're assigned, aka "painted," what you're going to be as a grownup. Jasmine desperately wants to be a singer-songwriter, but it's not in her family. All her best friends want to be in a band too, and they secretly practice together as the Thunderbolts. When Holly figures out a way for them to disguise themselves, the world is at their fingertips—or is it?

This sweet series isn't subtle about its message of fighting conformity. Be@rbrick drives home the point frequently, but it's also hard to forget that the characters are based on collectible toys. (Some bears are even referred to as "rare" in the show.) There are also a lot of rules in Be@rbrick, not all of which make total sense; you don't get to decide who you'll be, but you'll probably be what your parents are, unless you're not, etc. That said, this bear-power show has some catchy tunes and charming characters.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about freedom. How are the Be@rbricks stifled by the rules in their world? What would you do if you didn't get to choose who you are?

  • The band has to persevere to get what they want. Why is this an important character strength?
