What's the Story?

BETWEEN FATHER AND SON (aka Entre padre e hijo) is a Mexican micro-series about a lawyer whose future is upended after visiting her fiancé's family estate. Bárbara (Pamela Almanza) is a well-established attorney who's engaged to Álvaro (Erick Elías), a pilot whose first wife went missing months ago and is now presumed dead. When Bárbara joins him at the family's rural estate so that she can get to know his family, she soon realizes that Álvaro isn't over the loss. A walk around the area leads her to a man with whom she has instant chemistry, only to discover soon after that he is Iker (Graco Sendel), Álvaro's son. But as her feelings for Iker grow, so do Bárbara's suspicions that something darker and stranger is going on, in part because Margarita (Carmen Delgado), the family matriarch, and Álvaro's sister Gaby (Natalia Plascencia), seem a little too concerned about her every move. So does Álvaro's daughter Leo (Ivanna Castro), who takes every opportunity to tell her that she should stay away from them. Should she?

The Mexican micro-series, which consists of 20 episodes of 7-10 minutes each, offers a twisted tale filled with steamy romance, infidelity, cruelty, and possible murder. Each Between Father and Son episode attempts to increase the tension in the story to maintain its audience appeal. But there are frequent moments in the narrative that that are rough and disjointed due, in part, to having to contain the content in each short installment. The romantic threads have a soap opera vibe to it, but some of the darker elements of the story might remind you of some of the amateurish "creepy pasta" (user-generated horror stories) circulating the internet. It's not the most riveting series, but Between Father and Son offers just enough good drama to keep it interesting.

  • What is a micro-series? Would Between Father and Son be more (or less) entertaining if it was produced in a longer TV format?
