Beyond the Bar
What's the Story?
The K-drama BEYOND THE BAR (aka Esquire) is a law procedural focused on a gifted young rookie attorney and her seasoned, no-nonsense boss. When the disheveled and socially awkward Kang Hyo-min (Jung Chae-yeon) shows up late to a group interview at Yullim Law Firm, she's sure she lost the job. But the legal prodigy is hired and chooses to join the litigation division as her rookie placement, much to the chagrin of seasoned attorney Yoon Seok-hoon (Lee Jin-wook), who expects timeliness and order at all times. Along with rookies Ji Gook-hyeon (Kim Kang-min), Choi Ho-yeon (Lee Ju-yeon), and Oh Sang-cheol (Pyo Jae-beon), who are managed by Lee Jin-woo (Lee Hak-joo), they're starting from the bottom and are expected to learn fast. Kang and her nontraditional approach to doing things annoys Yoon, but soon he and the rest of the firm learn how good a lawyer she is.
Is It Any Good?
The soapy but substantive Korean legal procedural mixes romantic tensions with insights gained by case law conversations and courtroom litigation. The Beyond the Bar formula isn't particularly unique, but the cases are interesting, and the cast is strong enough to keep the narratives moving. Meanwhile, Kang Hyo-min's character is well-developed, and her quirky personality, combined with her ability to think critically and offer sound arguments about the letter of the law, makes her particularly compelling. Not surprisingly, this also allows the gifted rookie to chip away at Yoon Seok-hoon's tough exterior, especially given her passion for helping the "everyday" hard-working person. The firm's hierarchy of leadership makes for some noteworthy moments, and the slow reveal of some of the attorneys' personal challenges adds another layer of drama. It's a good series that those who like lawyer-themed dramas will find worth investing in. But Beyond the Bar also offers an interesting glimpse at the applications of South Korean law, the interpretations of which don't always fully align with Western applications.

TV series like Beyond the Bar, Suits, and The Good Wife are all produced in different countries but feature attorneys working endless hours and sacrificing their personal lives. Is this based on stereotypes about lawyers?
