Black Knight
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
BLACK KNIGHT takes place 40 years after meteors collided with the Earth, sinking continents and turning the Korean peninsula into a desert wasteland. People have been divided into castes, receiving QR code tattoos to identify them -- except for the lowest of classes, called refugees, who live on the outskirts of society. Because the air is polluted and water and food are scarce, survival depends on the delivery of oxygen and food. Men with superior fighting skills called Deliverymen have become the lifeline for the majority of people, fighting off hunters and helping people in need. Deliveryman 5-8 (Kim Woo-bin) has uncovered a secret plan that could upend the social order. Can he change the course of the future?
Is It Any Good?
An otherwise compelling show buckles under the weight of mind-numbing violence. In Black Night, the dystopian trope echoes with reverberations of the panic of pandemic -- deliverymen take on hero status as they bring needed goods to vulnerable people who gasp for air behind their masks.
Those familiar with K-dramas will recognize some of the fine actors in the cast, who get little chance to shine: the dialogue-to-violence ratio favors the fighting. Not recommended for young teens, and parents might ultimately choose to find more compelling -- less brutal -- sci-fi for their families.
