A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall is a sci-fi anime series based on the Black Rock Shooter media franchise created by Ryohei Fuke. The series centers around humanity's struggle to take back Earth from a warped artificial intelligence. There's a lot of intense fantasy violence (dead bodies, guns, shooting, explosions, etc.). There's some nudity and sexual references throughout. Characters wear revealing clothing and naked backsides are shown. Language includes "stupid," "hell," "damn" "goddamnit," "whore," "bitch," and "f--k."
What's the Story?
BLACK ROCK SHOOTER DAWN FALL is a science fiction anime series set in an apocalyptic future where humanity is trying to take back Earth from a corrupt AI. A girl named Empress (voiced by Courtney Lin) awakens in a research facility without her memory. She soon finds out she's a special technologically enhanced super soldier and one of the last surviving protectors of mankind. Empress is one of the only beings who can turn the tides of the war. She must stop the construction of the orbital elevator, an impending threat that if completed will ensure the destruction of humanity and the Earth.
Is It Any Good?
This science fiction anime series borrows from the familiar apocalyptic settings of other hit franchises, but unfortunately doesn't have anything new or particularly interesting to say. Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall feels like it recycles the common idea of a rogue AI gone haywire, intent on wiping out humanity. All the standard fare is here: humanity is on its last legs, struggling against overwhelming odds in a bleak world. Only a miraculous event could turn the tides of the war. Luckily, one of the last surviving heroes awakens just in time to give humanity a fighting shot. It's a story that's been done before, and Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall doesn't do anything new or exciting with it. Character development and worldbuilding take a backseat to the constant action sequences, which are fine, but unremarkable. Overall, this series doesn't deliver anything new or surprising, but it might offer some mindless fun with all its action.
