No sane, responsible parent would let any 12-year-old child watch this.

The best show on TV, but not for most of today's young people

This show is not only the best show on TV right now, it is also flowing with history, inside and out. Everything from Luciano and Lansky's start with Rothstein to Nucky Johnson (Thompson in the show) having ties politically with the Attorney General and Washington, even to helping get Harding elected. When we check on many of these side stories we find they are very accurate, to even Luciano being arrested and giving up his stash to the police. Nucky had ties everywhere, one of the reasons he wasn't brought down for 30 years. He had political ties and was not simply a criminal but also a man who many people saw as a model citizen. He made his city love him, kept gangsters on his side, and made sure to have the biggest politicians in his pocket as well, unlike many others during this era. But unfortunately, most children do not have an interest in such history and meaning, as this could provide a good basis for high school students to become educated in areas of US history. But most are looking for simply heroes and villains, or teen drama and romance, and don't even have an interest in reading any further. Therefore if your kid is bright, I'd watch it with him or her, adding explanations and answering questions. It could be very beneficial in learning a lot about what most teachers won't tell you regarding the Prohibition Era and just how corrupt everyone in this nation was. But if your kid is simply looking for entertainment and isn't one who happens to be pretty mature, wise, and outgoing when it comes to learning, it isn't for them. Therefore cut 90% of adolescents out today. But still, the best show on TV.

Great drama -- breathes life into the 1920's.

Set in the roaring 20's, Boardwalk Empire follows the life and times of Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Buscemi) and his efforts to carve out an empire amid the bootlegging and debauchery of 1920's Atlantic City. This drama is very loosely based on the real life of Atlantic City boss, Enoch Lewis "Nucky" Johnson. It touches on most of the major events, trends and fashions of the time period. It's plot and storyline involve real life characters such as President Harding, Al Capone, Lucky Luciano and Arnold Rothstein. It could be quite useful in bringing the 1920's to life for high school aged kids. The show is pretty detailed and accurate in that regard. It's also well acted, well directed and quite riveting to watch. It's an excellent program and very entertaining. But it's not really appropriate for kids under 14. It's a show for adults. It's got nudity, sex, violence, profanity, incest, drug use, alcohol use, adult themes and adult content.

Good for teens and very mature tweens

If your kid is mature enough then it is a great show and it teaches kids about the 1920s.
