What's the Story?
#BRINGBACKALICE is a Polish mystery about the return of a missing teen and a man who's convinced that his sister's disappearance is somehow connected. Alicja "Ala" Stec (Elena Englert) is a popular social media influencer who goes missing after an evening at a rave with her boyfriend Mikey (Marcel Opalinski), best friend Monika (Katarzyna Galazka), and the rest of their circle. A year later, Ala reappears physically unharmed, but with no memory of what happened. Anxiously waiting to talk to her is local drug dealer Tomek Bielecki (Sebastian Dela), who believes that the disappearance of his sister Wera is somehow connected. As Ala slowly recovers from the trauma and tries to piece together brief flashes of memories of what happened to her, Tomek continues to search for the link between her and his sister.
Is It Any Good?
The decidedly mature series (available dubbed and subtitled in English) creates a suspenseful narrative by offering hints of what might have happened in the past throughout a present-day teen drama. As Ala attempts to string together fragments of flashbacks that may or may not happened, the whispers of her friends create the tension necessary to keep the mystery going. Meanwhile, the troubled Tomek, while unapologetic for living a thuggish lifestyle, is presented as a sympathetic character, making it easier to appreciate his desperate attempts to find his sister. #BringBackAlice is entertaining, but it's also pretty edgy, making it best left for older viewers.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about showing risky behaviors, explicit sexual content, or extensive recreational drug use in entertainment media. Does showing them keep the story moving or making it more interesting? How can mature or edgy themes be presented in media without having to show this behavior on camera?
Who are the more sympathetic characters in #BringBackAlice? Why? How does this affect the way the story is told?
