What's the Story?

CALL HER ALEX is a two-part autobiographical documentary about popular podcaster Alexandra "Alex" Cooper as she sets out on her 2023 Unwell tour. Known for her podcast, Call Her Daddy, a women-centered series known for its open conversations about life, sex, and relationships, Cooper sets out on a seven-city tour, during which time she appears on stage sharing personal anecdotes and continuing some of the conversations featured on her podcast. Cameras reveal some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into putting on the show. Between scenes of lighthearted or tension-filled moments as the final details are pulled together, Alex reflects on why she's unapologetically open and blunt about topics that are often considered crude or taboo for women to openly discuss. Helping tell her story are interviews with family members and friends, along with family pictures, archive sports footage, and video diary excerpts and creative productions from her childhood. Conversations about how Alex's edgy podcast has been received over the years, and how it's evolving to address important women's issues (such as Roe v. Wade) are also had.

The insightful series reveals how specific events in Alex Cooper's personal life have shaped her as a strong feminist voice for her generation. Call Her Alex reveals how her creativity and athletic competitiveness helped her cope with things like childhood bullying while growing up, and how the success she achieved in college were marred by harassment and systematic sexism. Meanwhile, brief excerpts from Cooper's Unwell tour performances highlight a combination of crude antics and emotional conversations about women, self-esteem, and empowerment. This content may not be to everyone's liking, but there isn't much of it. In fact, what makes Call Her Alex compelling is Alex's story, and how she's combined different life experiences and used them to become the woman and professional she is today. Fans of Call Her Daddy will be drawn to it, but those outside of the podcast universe may still find her interesting.
