Captain Fall
What's the Story?
Jonathan Fall (voiced by Jason Ritter) is an extreme underachiever from a prestigious family of naval officers. He falls backwards into a job commanding a cruise ship and becomes: Captain Fall. Little does he know that he's being set up by an ingenious cabal of smugglers looking for a stone cold sucker to be the new face of their operation.
Is It Any Good?
This so-so series dabbles in the South Park, Simpsons, and Family Guy styles of comedy, but it's mostly a straightforward sitcom. Using absurdism and shock humor, Captain Fall riffs on classic action set-ups, specifically the oblivious protagonist who stumbles into an evil conspiracy. The series seems to want to check some of the boxes for an Adult Swim-type show, but then also tries to appeal to more mainstream viewers. For that reason, this seafaring sitcom never quite finds its comedic land legs.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about comedy. Where does the humor come from in Captain Fall? How does the show feel about its characters? How do you think the show wants you to feel about them?
How does the show portray Fall and his family? How are the smugglers portrayed? Who or what do you find yourself rooting for?
